Two Fuel Doors, One DEF Door: Protecting Dual-Tank Chassis Cab Apparatus

The most common ordering mistake we see from departments is not picking the wrong size. It is buying one door for a rig that has more than one opening.
It is an easy mistake to make. You walk up to the side of the truck you normally fuel from, see one filler, and order one door. Then it arrives and somebody points out there is another filler on the other side, and a DEF cap forward of it.
The Rule Is Simple: One Door Per Opening
A locking fuel door covers one filler opening. It does not cover two, and there is no configuration where it does. So the question to answer before ordering is not "which door do I need" but "how many openings does this rig have."
Our own fitment records are explicit about this. On the dual-tank chassis cab configurations, the notes on file state that two doors are required — one per diesel fuel cap. On builds with two diesel fillers plus an exposed DEF cap, the record calls for three: two diesel and one DEF. That is not an upsell, it is what the record says, and it is why those platforms are listed with multi-door sets rather than a single door.
Which Platforms This Applies To
The Ford F-550 and F-600 chassis cab in dual-tank configuration is the clearest case, and it is a very common apparatus and command-vehicle platform. The verified records for that family include both a two-door set and a three-door set precisely because both configurations exist in the field.
The Ram 5500 splits the same way. Our records distinguish between single-tank builds, which need one door, and two-tank builds, which need two. Same chassis name, different door count, decided by how the truck was actually spec'd.
The broader Ford Super Duty chassis cab family — F-350, F-450, F-550 and F-600 — has verified records for single and multi-door configurations along with matching housing bezels. Cutaway chassis such as the E-350 and E-450 are more often a single filler, but a diesel cutaway with an exposed DEF cap is still two openings.
Do Not Skip the DEF Filler
There is a temptation to protect the diesel and leave DEF open, on the theory that DEF is cheap. That reasoning has the risk backwards.
Nobody is stealing DEF. The risk at the DEF filler is contamination, and DEF systems are deliberately intolerant of contamination. A faulted DEF system on a modern emissions-compliant diesel leads to derate and eventually to a speed limit. An apparatus that will not exceed a crawl is out of service just as surely as one that will not start — and it will be out of service until a shop clears the fault and repairs whatever was damaged.
The DEF filler is the cheapest opening to protect and, in out-of-service terms, one of the more expensive ones to leave open.
How to Count Your Openings in Five Minutes
- Walk both sides of the rig and find every filler. Do not assume symmetry, and do not stop at the first one.
- Identify each one — diesel or DEF. DEF is usually the smaller cap, often blue, and frequently forward of the fuel filler.
- Note whether each opening has a non-locking factory plastic trim door. Those get removed; the locking door replaces them.
- Measure each opening and the flat area around it. Openings on the same truck are not always the same size, which is why small and large doors both exist.
- Total it up. That total is your door count, and each door needs one pack of security screws — the Safety Torx driver bit is included in the pack.
Check It Against the Record
