Freightliner Custom Chassis Hits the Gas: New Class A Gas Chassis for 2028

Big news for gas Class A motorhomes. This week RV News reported that Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (FCCC) plans to build a Type A gas motorhome chassis. That gives RV builders a second new gas option as Ford winds down its own F-53/F-59 production.
What FCCC Announced
FCCC has built diesel Class A and Super C chassis for years. It first showed a gas engine back at the 2017 RVIA show, but that engine never went into RV production. This time, the company says it is all in.
Why This Matters to Gas Motorhome Owners
For years, almost every gas Class A rode on a Ford F-53. In August, Blue Bird announced it will take over Ford's F-53/F-59 stripped chassis starting in 2028 (read our post on that). With FCCC joining in, buyers will have more choices, more competition and a bigger service network.
One thing doesn't change with a new chassis: a big gas tank behind a thin plastic fuel door is a target. Fuel thieves don't care whose name is on the frame rails. If the cap is exposed and the door just pops open, siphoning or drilling takes minutes.
If There's an Exposed Fuel Cap, We'll Be There to Cover It
The RV Fuel Vault replaces the factory fuel door with a heavy-duty, locking steel door. It's made in the USA and installs with basic hand tools.
When the first FCCC gas Class A coaches roll out in 2028, we'll check the fuel fill on each model. Wherever there's an exposed fuel cap, we plan to have a locking door ready for it.

Quick Answers
When will the Freightliner gas Class A chassis be available? FCCC expects production to start in January 2028.
What engine will it use? The General Motors 6.6-liter gas V8, with Roush Power Systems handling the integration.
Will The RV Fuel Vault fit it? The chassis isn't in production yet. We'll confirm fitment model by model once coaches are built. If it has an exposed fuel cap, we plan to cover it.
Does a new chassis make my RV safer from fuel theft? No. Theft protection comes down to the fuel door. A locking steel door is the simplest fix.
