The technique is boring, which is why it works. Walk up between parked trucks, flip the fuel door, remove or defeat the cap, drop a hose, and pump into a container in the bed of a pickup. Two to four minutes per truck, no alarm, no glass broken, no forced entry that would show up on an insurance claim as anything more than missing fuel.

The same open filler is also the easiest way to sabotage a truck. Contaminating a common-rail diesel takes about ten seconds and costs the owner thousands.

Why a Locking Gas Cap Is Not the Fix

A locking cap adds maybe sixty seconds to the job. Once the fuel door is open, the cap is in the thief's hands. A cordless drill through the lock cylinder, or a pipe wrench on the body of the cap, gets past it quietly. And now you also have a damaged filler neck to deal with.

The fix is to keep the cap unreachable. Protect the opening and there is nothing to attack.
