“Check Fuel Inlet” Warning on Your Ford Gas Motorhome? Here’s the Fix

Short answer: if your Ford-chassis gas motorhome keeps showing a “Check Fuel Inlet” warning, dust and road grime on an exposed fuel-fill seal is a common cause. Cleaning it fixes the warning for now, but it keeps coming back until the filler sits behind a door. The RV Fuel Vault is that door.
A real owner’s story
We recently got a 5-star Google review from an owner, Jeff S., that explains the problem better than we could:
“The RV Fuel Vault was super easy to install, remove the 12 factory screws, place in position, and install the 12 new screws. Our RV looks nicer with having the gas cap exposed. And we had issues with getting error code of ‘Check Fuel Inlet’ by dust getting on the seal of the gas cap. Our Ford service technician researched the problem and found that the gas cap provided should not be exposed to the elements, and should be behind a door. So problem solved!”

Why gas Class A and Class C motorhomes get this warning
Ford builds the E-350 and E-450 (Class C gas) and the F53 (Class A gas) as bare chassis, and Workhorse builds its own Class A gas chassis. On a Ford pickup or van, the fuel filler sits behind the body’s fuel door. When an RV maker builds a motorhome on these chassis, the filler usually ends up exposed on the side of the coach, with nothing protecting it from the weather.
Every mile you drive throws dust, sand, rain, and road spray at that filler. When grit gets on the seal, the fuel-fill system may not seal properly, and the dash warns you. In Jeff’s case, his Ford service technician found the root cause was simple: the filler should not be exposed to the elements, it should be behind a door.
The fix: put it behind a door
- Get it checked first. If the warning is on now, have your service center inspect and clean the inlet and seal.
- Then protect it. The RV Fuel Vault bolts over the exposed filler and closes it behind a sturdy door, keeping dust and weather off the seal.
- Bonus: it locks. The same door stops fuel theft, siphoning, and tank tampering, which is a problem the factory never solved either.
Install in minutes
Like Jeff said: remove the 12 factory screws, set the RV Fuel Vault in place, and install the 12 new anti-tamper security screws (included). Most owners are done in 8 to 15 minutes with basic hand tools. No drilling, no cutting.
Which motorhomes this applies to

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Ford gas motorhome say "Check Fuel Inlet"?
A "Check Fuel Inlet" (or check fuel fill inlet) message on a Ford-chassis gas motorhome means the fuel-fill system is not sealing properly. On Class C (Ford E-350 and E-450) and Class A (Ford F53 and Workhorse) motorhomes the fuel filler is often left exposed on the side of the coach, so road dust and grit can build up on the seal and keep it from sealing. One of our customers, Jeff S., had this exact warning and his Ford service technician found that the filler should not be exposed to the elements and should sit behind a door.
How do I stop the Check Fuel Inlet warning from coming back?
Have the inlet and seal inspected and cleaned by your service center first, then protect it so dirt cannot get back on the seal. The RV Fuel Vault bolts over the exposed filler and closes it behind a locking door, keeping dust, rain, and road grime off the seal. Jeff S. reported the warning was "problem solved" after installing it.
Does the RV Fuel Vault fit gas Class A and Class C motorhomes?
Yes. It fits Class A gas motorhomes on the Ford F53 and Workhorse chassis, Class C motorhomes on the Ford E-350 and E-450 (and Chevy/GMC Express & Savana cutaway) chassis, and Chevrolet P30/P32 Class A gas chassis. Use Find My Fit at thervfuelvault.com/find-my-fit to confirm your exact RV.
How hard is it to install?
Very easy. As Jeff S. put it: remove the 12 factory screws, place the RV Fuel Vault in position, and install the 12 new anti-tamper screws. Most owners finish in 8 to 15 minutes with basic hand tools, and no drilling is required.
Note: a “Check Fuel Inlet” warning can have more than one cause. If it stays on, have your Ford service center check the fuel-fill system. The RV Fuel Vault protects the filler from dust and weather. It does not repair a damaged part.
