Real-World Story: Fuel Stolen From a Brand-New Mobile STEM Classroom

Every so often a story reaches us that puts into sharp focus exactly why we built the RV Fuel Vault. This is one of those stories — and it is happening right now, in the real world, to people doing genuinely good work.

A brand-new mobile classroom, on the road for STEM

STEM Quest is The STEM Alliance's brand-new, 33-foot, state-of-the-art traveling classroom. It brings hands-on K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math learning directly to students — meeting kids where they are and opening doors to opportunities many of them have never had access to before.

The vehicle was custom-outfitted by Farber Specialty Vehicles, a respected builder of purpose-built mobile units. For a nonprofit, a vehicle like this represents an enormous investment — years of fundraising, grants, and community support poured into a single mission on wheels.

Three months in, the fuel was gone

Just three months into owning their new mobile learning lab, the STEM Quest team walked out to find that all of the fuel had been stolen out of the tank overnight.

Fuel theft is not a victimless crime. When it targets a nonprofit's education vehicle, it steals more than diesel — it steals field trips, lab days, and learning opportunities from kids who were counting on them.
