What does a new fifth wheel, travel trailer or toy hauler owner need?

By The RV Fuel Vault, Sarasota, Florida · Updated October 2026

Short answer

A new towable owner needs: a properly rated hitch with a hitch pin lock and a coupler or king-pin lock, a brake controller, wheel chocks and leveling blocks, a surge protector, a drinking-water hose with regulator and filter, a sewer kit, a TPMS, and safety detectors. If your fifth wheel, travel trailer or toy hauler has an onboard fuel station (for refueling bikes, ATVs and toys, or a generator fill), that fill is usually exposed and unlocked. The RV Fuel Vault Round door locks over it, from $159.95.

Does my trailer need a locking fuel door?

Only if it has its own fuel tank and fill, which is common on toy haulers and some fifth wheels and travel trailers with a fuel station or generator. Trailers without an onboard tank do not need one, and the RV Fuel Vault does not fit tow vehicles.

A toy hauler fuel tank is often 30 gallons or more, parked at campgrounds and storage lots for weeks. A locked door keeps it full and free of water or debris.
