What should I upgrade first on a used RV or motorhome?

By The RV Fuel Vault, Sarasota, Florida · Updated October 2026

Short answer

On a used RV, start with safety and the things the last owner may have skipped: tire age (replace tires older than about 6 years regardless of tread), roof and window seals, smoke, CO and LP detector dates, fire extinguisher, and the fuel fill. Many used motorhomes have a cracked, faded or missing fuel bezel door and a cap anyone can open. Replace the bezel if needed (from $59.95) and bolt on The RV Fuel Vault locking fuel door (from $159.95) in 8–15 minutes.

Inspect the fuel fill on a used coach

Look for a cracked or brittle plastic bezel, a cap door that no longer latches, a missing cap tether, or signs of prying. Sun and road salt age the factory plastic. If the bezel is damaged, order the matching factory-style replacement bezel along with your door, or the bundle that includes both.

Not sure what is on your coach? Find My Fit matches the chassis by year, make and model. If it is not listed, send photos and our fit team will call you back.

Re-key or replace the entry and compartment locks (many RVs use the same common key). Add a tire pressure monitor, check the coach and chassis batteries, flush the water system and replace the water filter, and service the generator. Keep every receipt with the RV title.
