Chevrolet and GMC Motorhome Buyer’s Guide: Class C and Super C Models Compared

Why Look at a Chevrolet-Based Motorhome?

Ford builds most Class C chassis, but Chevrolet is the main alternative, and several builders now offer the same floorplan on either one. If you prefer GM trucks, already have a GM service relationship, or simply want to compare, here’s what’s out there.

Chevrolet Chassis Used in Motorhomes

  • Chevrolet 4500 cutaway, the Chevy answer to the Ford E-450, used for gas Class C coaches.
  • Chevrolet Silverado 5500HD, a medium-duty chassis built with International (sold by International as the CV Series), used for newer Super C coaches.
  • Chevrolet C5500 and C6500, medium-duty chassis used by Nexus RV for its Super C models.
  • Chevrolet Kodiak C5500, the older medium-duty chassis found on used Super C coaches from the 2000s.

  • Class C Coaches on the Chevrolet 4500

  • Jayco Redhawk SE: 22A, 22C, 22T and 27N
  • Thor Four Winds: 22B and 22E
  • Thor Chateau: 19X and 19Z
  • Coachmen Freelander: several floorplans, including 22QB, 22XG, 23FS, 24FS and 26DS

  • The Redhawk SE, Four Winds, Chateau and Freelander are also sold on the Ford E-Series, so the same model name can mean a different chassis. Check the door-jamb label before you order parts. For the Ford versions, see our E-350 and E-450 buyer’s guide.

Super C Coaches on Chevrolet Medium-Duty Chassis

  • Coachmen Entourage and Forest River Entourage (320LV, 330DS, 340BH): Silverado 5500HD / International CV
  • Nexus RV Verrado (33S): Chevrolet C5500
  • Nexus RV Rebel (30R): Chevrolet C6500
  • Gulf Stream Endura (6316, 2004–2009): Chevrolet Kodiak C5500

  • What About GMC?

GMC sells the Savana cutaway, the badge-twin of the Chevrolet Express cutaway, and older coaches were built on the GMC TopKick, the twin of the Chevrolet Kodiak. Mechanically they match their Chevy counterparts.

We don’t have a confirmed GMC-badged coach in our fitment database yet. If you own one, choose Other / Not Listed in Find My Fit or call us with a photo of your fuel fill. We’ll confirm the right door before you order, and your coach helps us add GMC fitment for the next owner.

What to Compare When You Shop

  • Chassis service. Chevrolet and GMC truck dealers can service the cutaway chassis. Medium-duty Silverado 5500HD and older Kodiak/TopKick coaches may need a commercial truck shop.
  • Gas or diesel. The 4500 cutaway coaches are gas. The Super C coaches on medium-duty chassis are typically diesel, with a DEF tank to protect too.
  • Same model, different chassis. Compare the Chevy and Ford versions of the same floorplan side by side for weight ratings, ride and dealer support.

  • Locking Down the Fuel Fill

Chevrolet-based coaches don’t come with a locking fuel door either. Here’s what our fitment database lists for The RV Fuel Vault™:

  • Chevrolet 4500 Class C (Jayco Redhawk SE, Thor Four Winds): RVFV-1001R Round Door Single, $159.95 pre-order. The Thor Chateau and Coachmen Freelander on the Chevy 4500 are still being confirmed.
  • Coachmen and Forest River Entourage, Nexus Verrado and Nexus Rebel: RVFV-2001R Round Door 2-Pack, $319.95 pre-order
  • Gulf Stream Endura (Kodiak C5500): RVFV-2001R is expected but still being confirmed

  • Check your coach in Find My Fit → | Pre-order →
