Class C Motorhome Buyer’s Guide: Ford E-350 vs. E-450 Models Compared

Why Most Class C Motorhomes Ride on a Ford E-Series

Walk any RV dealer lot and the majority of gas Class C motorhomes you see are built on the same foundation: the Ford E-Series Super Duty cutaway, sold as the E-350 and the E-450. The coach builder takes a cab and a bare frame from Ford and builds the house on top.

That shared foundation is good news for shoppers. Parts, service and roadside help are easy to find, almost any Ford truck dealer can work on the drivetrain, and you can compare coaches from different brands on equal footing because the chassis underneath is the same.

This guide covers how to tell the two chassis apart, which brands build on each one, and the one thing every E-Series coach has in common that most buyers never notice until it’s too late.

E-350 vs. E-450: What’s the Difference?

Both are Ford cutaway chassis with the same cab and the same basic layout. The difference is how much they are built to carry.

  • E-450 is the heavier-duty version, with a higher weight rating and dual rear wheels. It carries most coaches in the mid-20s to low-30s foot range.
  • E-350 is used for the shorter, lighter coaches, typically the compact 19- to 25-foot floorplans.

  • Recent model years use Ford’s 7.3L gas V8; earlier ones used the 6.8L V10. Either way, it’s a gas engine with a single fuel fill on the driver’s side.

A quick way to check: the chassis model is printed on the Ford door-jamb sticker and in the owner’s manual. Floorplan length is a good hint too. In our fitment database, Thor’s Four Winds 19X, 19Z, 21Z, 22Z and 25Z are on the E-350, while the Four Winds 28G, 28Z, 29K, 31E and 31H are on the E-450.

The Builders and Their E-Series Coaches

    Thor Motor Coach

Thor builds more E-Series coaches than anyone. On both chassis you’ll find the Four Winds, Chateau, Freedom Elite, Quantum, Quantum ESpec, Echelon and Coleman. The Geneva and Majestic (Thor’s rental-fleet model) are on the E-350, while the Magnitude GA31 and the Outlaw Class C toy hauler are on the E-450. Thor’s Axis and Vegas are compact Class A coaches that also ride on the E-450.

    Jayco

The Redhawk and Greyhawk are on the E-450, and the Redhawk SE comes in both E-350 (20LF, 22AF, 22CF, 22EF, 22TF) and E-450 (29KF, 31FF) versions. Jayco also builds some Redhawk SE floorplans on the Chevrolet 4500; see our Chevrolet and GMC guide.

    Entegra Coach

Entegra offers the Odyssey and Esteem on the E-450, the Odyssey SE on the E-350, and the 2027 Odyssey 25R Esteem Edition.

    Winnebago

The Minnie Winnie and Spirit come in E-350 (22M, 22R) and E-450 (25B, 26T, 31H, 31K) versions. The Outlook, Suncruiser and Sunflyer round out Winnebago’s E-Series lineup.

    Coachmen

The Leprechaun and Freelander come on both chassis, along with the Cross Trail XL. The Concord is on the E-450.

    Forest River

The Sunseeker family (Sunseeker, Sunseeker LE, Sunseeker Classic) and Forester family (Forester LE, Forester Classic) are spread across both chassis. The Campsite 29AK is on the E-450.

    Other Builders

Grand Design’s Lineage Series E (the 30DC, launched as a 2027 model) is on the E-450. Gulf Stream (BT Cruiser, Conquest), East to West (Entrada), Fleetwood (Altitude, plus older Tioga models), Holiday Rambler (Incline), Nexus (Viper), Phoenix Cruiser and ALP Adventurer (19RD) also build on E-Series chassis.

Shopping used or in Canada? Older Bigfoot 3000 Series, Triple E Regency and Glendale Royal Classic coaches were also built on the E-450.

What to Compare When You Shop

Because the chassis is the same, the differences are in the house. Compare:

  • Weight and payload. Check the cargo carrying capacity (CCC) sticker. Longer E-350 floorplans can run close to the limit once you add water, people and gear.
  • Slide-outs and length. More slides mean more space at camp but more weight and more to maintain.
  • Bed layout. Rear corner bed, walk-around queen, twin beds or bunks all change how the coach lives.
  • Tank sizes. Fresh, grey and black tank capacity matter if you boondock.
  • Dealer and warranty support. A coach is only as good as the service network behind it.

  • The One Thing Every E-Series Coach Has in Common

No matter which brand you pick, every Class C on the E-350 or E-450 has the same fuel fill: a cap in a recessed bezel on the driver’s side, with no locking door. Anyone walking past at a campground, storage lot or rest stop can twist off the cap, siphon fuel or drop something in the tank.

This isn’t a builder oversight. It’s how the Ford cutaway chassis comes from the factory, so it carries over to every coach built on it.

The RV Fuel Vault™ is a keyed locking fuel door that bolts over that factory bezel. For E-350 and E-450 coaches, the part is the RVFV-1002L Large Standard Single ($169.95 pre-order, $199.95 list). If your factory bezel is cracked or missing, the RVFV-BDL-1002L bundle adds a new bezel ($239.90 pre-order). The RVFV-SS100 security screw pack ($9.95 pre-order) makes the install tamper-resistant. It installs with basic hand tools, and the installation tips post walks through it.

If you’ve seen a “Check Fuel Inlet” message on your dash, read our fix for that warning. It applies to E-350, E-450 and F53 gas motorhomes.
