Class A Gas Motorhome Buyer’s Guide: Ford F53 and Workhorse Models Compared

The Two Chassis Behind Gas Class A Motorhomes
If you’re shopping for a gas Class A, the coach is almost certainly built on one of two chassis:
Because the chassis is shared, you can compare a Thor, a Winnebago and a Fleetwood on equal footing and focus on what really differs: the floorplan, construction and dealer support.
How to Tell Which Chassis You Have
Check the chassis label on the driver’s door jamb or in the chassis owner’s manual. On a used coach, the steering wheel badge and the engine are good clues: a Ford V10 or 7.3L V8 means F53. Your VIN will also show the chassis maker.
Ford F53 Builders and Models
Thor Motor Coach
Thor’s F53 lineup includes the A.C.E., Hurricane, Windsport, Luminate, Indigo, Resonate and the Outlaw Class A toy hauler. Older Challenger coaches are F53 too.
Winnebago
The Adventurer, Intent, Sunstar and Vista are Winnebago’s gas Class A models on the F53.
Fleetwood RV and Holiday Rambler
Fleetwood builds the Bounder, Flair, Fortis and Southwind. Holiday Rambler’s Admiral, Eclipse, Invicta and Vacationer share many of the same floorplans.
Jayco and Entegra Coach
Jayco’s Alante, Precept and Precept Prestige are on the F53, and so are Entegra’s Vision, Vision XL and Emblem.
Forest River
The FR3, FR3 Plus, Georgetown GT3 and Georgetown GT5 are Forest River’s F53 coaches.
Coachmen
The Pursuit, Mirada, Encore and the compact Euro (25EU, 25LE, 25TB) are on the F53.
Newmar and Tiffin
Newmar’s gas coaches, the Bay Star, Bay Star Sport and Canyon Star, are on the F53, as is Tiffin’s Open Road Allegro.
Older and Discontinued F53 Coaches
On the used market you’ll also find F53 coaches from Damon (Challenger, Intruder, Outlaw, Daybreak, Ultrasport), Georgie Boy (Cruise Master and others), the Nexus Maybach and Canada’s Triple E Commander.
Workhorse Coaches on the Used Market
In our database, coaches on the Workhorse W20, W22 and W24 include the Winnebago Adventurer, Brave and Sightseer, the Itasca Suncruiser and Sunova, the Fleetwood Bounder, Pace Arrow and Southwind, the Coachmen Mirada and the Forest River Georgetown, all from 2000 to 2012.
Workhorse coaches can be good value, but have a chassis shop inspect brakes, suspension and steering components before you buy, and confirm parts availability for the specific model.
What to Compare When You Shop
The One Thing Every F53 and Workhorse Coach Has in Common
Whatever brand you choose, gas Class A motorhomes on these chassis share an exposed fuel fill: a cap in a recessed bezel with no locking door. Coaches spend long stretches parked at campgrounds and storage lots, which gives a thief plenty of time to siphon fuel or contaminate the tank.
The RV Fuel Vault™ is a keyed locking fuel door that bolts over the factory bezel. For F53 and Workhorse W20/W22/W24 coaches, the part is the RVFV-1002L Large Standard Single ($169.95 pre-order, $199.95 list). The RVFV-BDL-1002L bundle ($239.90 pre-order) adds a new bezel if yours is cracked or missing, and the RVFV-SS100 security screw pack is $9.95 pre-order. Read more in our F53 and Workhorse locking fuel door guide.
Seeing a “Check Fuel Inlet” warning? It’s common on Ford gas motorhomes, including E-350, E-450 and F53 coaches. Here’s what causes it and how to fix it.
Some older coaches (for example Damon Daybreak and Ultrasport, most Georgie Boy models and the Triple E Commander) are still being confirmed. Find My Fit flags these, and we’ll check yours from a photo.
